Prizes and Awards

2014

Dr Jiajun Zhu (PhD student in Dental Materials Science) has won the International Association for Dental Research Heraeus Kulzer Travel Award, Asia/Pacific region, and was invited to present her research titled "Etch-and-rinse versus Self-etch Pretreatment: the Ultra-structural Investigation on Intact Enamel" at the 92nd IADR/AMER General Session in Cape Town, South Africa, 25-28 June 2014. Her primary supervisor is Dr James KH Tsoi (Assistant Professor in Dental Materials Science) and her co-supervisor is Dr Jukka Matinlinna (Associate Professor in Dental Materials Science).
Dr Jayakumar Jayaraman (PhD student in Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics) is one of nine winners in the  inaugural "GO CAMBRIDGE Enterprise Competition" organised by The University of Hong Kong School of Professional and Continuing Education (HKU SPACE) to encourage and spread the spirit of enterprise in the community. Each winner will receive sponsorship worth HK$27,000 to participate in the Enterprisers Programme (19-22 May 2014; http://www.cfel.jbs.cam.ac.uk/programmes/enterprisers/) run by the University of Cambridge Judge Business School's Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning.

2013

Ms Sarah SW Wong (PhD student in Oral Biosciences; supervisors, Prof LP Samaranayake and Dr CJ Seneviratne, now at the National University of Singapore, Singapore) has won the Online People’s Choice Award in the 2013 HKU 3-Minute Thesis Competition; her video “Discovery of a ‘Magic Bullet’ for a Deadly Fungus” can be viewed on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfB6oHiz1Gg.
Ms Ying Zheng (PhD student in Oral Diagnosis and Polyclinics) won the Best Poster Sunstar Award at the 10th Asian Pacific Society of Periodontology Meeting in Nara, Japan, on 3-4 September 2013, for her research poster presentation titled “Genetic polymorphisms of Th2 cell regulatory and effector molecules in non-smokers with or without periodontitis”, which was co-authored by Dr Lei Chai (School of Dentistry, The University of Queensland), Dr You-qiang Song (HKU Department of Biochemistry), and Prof W Keung Leung (HKU Faculty of Dentistry). Her principal PhD supervisor is Prof W Keung Leung and her co-supervisors are Dr You-qiang Song and Prof Lijian Jin.
The following student won research prizes at the 2nd meeting of the International Association for Dental Research – Asia Pacific Region (IADR-APR) in conjunction with the 24th Annual Scientific Meeting of the South-East Asia Association for Dental Education (SEAADE) held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 19 to 23 August 2013:
  • Ms Sarah SW Wong (PhD student in Oral Biosciences; supervisors, Prof LP Samaranayake and Dr CJ Seneviratne, now at the National University of Singapore, Singapore) won the runner-up prize of the IADR/Unilever Hatton Divisional Award (SEA Division) Contest – Senior Category, for her research project “Intra-oral delivery of a novel antifungal for Candida-associated denture stomatitis”.
Dr Hamdi HH Hamama (PhD student in Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics in the field of Aesthetic Dentistry; supervisors, Prof Cynthia KY Yiu and Dr Michael Burrow) won an Individual Award (Pan Asia Pacific) on 20 April 2013, at the 16th HKU Prize Presentation Ceremony for student winners of external competitions in 2012. He was recognised for his research success at the 26th Annual Scientific Meeting of the International Association for Dental Research South-East Asia Division (IADR-SEA), Hong Kong, 2012, where he won the IADR-SEA Best Paper Award in Cariology Research/Mineralized Tissue Research for an oral presentation titled “Effect of enzymatic-based chemomechanical caries removal on dentine bonding”.
Dr Aneesha Acharya (MPhil student in Implant Dentistry) won the IADR Young Investigator Implantology Research Group Award at the 91st General Session of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) in Seattle, Washington, USA, on 20-23 March 2013, for her oral presentation titled “Periodontal bone loss, sinus pathology predict posterior maxillary ridge height”, which was co-authored with Dr Jia Hao, Dr Anson Chau, Dr Nikos Mattheos, and Prof Niklaus Lang (all from HKU at the time of the project), and Dr Prashant Shirke (InSight CBCT Center, Mumbai, India). Her supervisor is Dr Nikos Mattheos (Clinical Associate Professor in Implant Dentistry).

2012

Dr Yong Chen (PhD student in Orthodontics) was awarded a study grant under the special Ministry of Education fund set up by the Central Government for 1000 HKU staff and students to organise academic visits to the mainland, as announced by the Vice-Premier of the State Council, Mr Keqiang Li, during his HKU Centenary visit in August 2011. Dr Chen used the grant to spend October 2012 conducting orthodontics research at the State Key Laboratory of Oral Diseases at the West China College of Stomatology, Sichuan University, under Prof Zhihe Zhao, President of the Chinese Orthodontic Society. Dr Chen’s PhD supervisors at the HKU Faculty of Dentistry are Dr Ricky WK Wong, Prof Urban Hägg, and Prof Colman McGrath.
The following students won research prizes at the 23rd Annual Meeting of the South-East Asia Association for Dental Education (SEAADE) in conjunction with the 26th Annual Scientific Meeting of the International Association for Dental Research South-East Asia Division (IADR-SEA), held in Hong Kong, 31 October – 4 November 2012:

Her research project entry was titled “Commensals and periodontopathogens modulate immuno-inflammatory trajectories in HOKs and THP-1″.
  • Ms Sarah Sze-wah Wong (PhD student in Oral Biosciences; supervisors, Prof Lakshman Samaranayake and Dr C Jayampath Seneviratne, now at the National University of Singapore, Singapore) won the runner-up place for the IADR/Unilever Hatton Divisional Award, Senior Category, Southeast Asia Division. Her research project entry was titled “Discovery of new antifungal for denture stomatitis and oral candidiasis”.
  • Ms Brenda SS Cheng (PhD student; supervisors, Dr Susan Bridges, Prof Cynthia KY Yiu, and Prof Colman McGrath) won the SEEADE Best Oral Presentation Award for her research presetnation titled “Evidence-based dental education: a case study in clinical communication”.
The following students won research awards on 20-23 June 2012 in Iguacu Falls, Brazil, at the 90th General Session of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR):
  • Dr Pei-hui Ding (PhD student) received an IADR/Colgate Research in Prevention Travel Award for her project titled "rhLBP and P gingivalis LPS crosstalk in modulating cytokine expression". Her supervisors are Prof Li-jian Jin and Prof Cun-yu Wang (UCLA School of Dentistry, Los Angeles, CA, USA).
  • Dr Waruna Lakmal Dissanayaka (PhD student) received an IADR/Colgate Research in Prevention Travel Award for his project titled "Synergistic actions of DPSCs and ECs in vascularizing bioengineered pulp". His supervisors are Dr Cheng-fei Zhang and Prof Li-jian Jin.
Dr Ying Cao (first-year PhD student in Oral Diagnosis and Polyclinics; supervisors: Dr Chun-hung Chu and Prof Edward CM Lo) won the FDI Poster Award in the theme of Dental Treatment and Restorative Dentistry, at the 2012 FDI Annual World Dental Congress, Hong Kong (29 August - 1 September 2012). The co-authors of the research poster, titled "Intrafibrillar apatite formation on phosphorylated dentine collagen by CPP-ACP" were Dr QL Li (Anhui Medical University, China), Prof Edward CM Lo (HKU), and Dr Chun-hung Chu (HKU).
Dr Divya Parthasarathy Srinivasan (PhD student in Comprehensive Dental Care) has won a full scholarship to attend this year's United Nations Millennium Development Goal (MDG) Summer School Program, themed Achieving MDGs for Global Health, at Fudan University, Shanghai, China, 8-20 July 2012. Dr Parthasarathy Srinivasan will present a case report on adolescent reproductive health at the summer school. Her PhD research project is titled "Oral health literacy: implications for Hong Kong children" (supervisor, Dr Susan Bridges; co-supervisors, Prof Colman McGrath and Dr Gloria HM Wong).
Ms Thanuja DK Herath (PhD student in Periodontology; supervisors, Prof Lijian Jin [HKU Faculty of Dentistry] and Dr Y Wang [HKU Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine] has won an HKU Faculty of Dentistry Postgraduate Research Output Prize 2012 (Research Postgraduate Category) for publishing the following research article: “Herath TD, Wang Y, Seneviratne CJ, Lu Q, Darveau RP, Wang CY, Jin L. Porphyromonas gingivalis lipopolysaccharide lipid A heterogeneity differentially modulates the expression of IL-6 and IL-8 in human gingival fibroblasts. The following students won research awards on 24-25 November 2011 in Sichuan, China, at the Faculty’s Fourth Annual Conjoint Scientific Meeting, held with the Sichuan University West China College of Stomatology, Chengdu:
  • Miss Sarah SW Wong (MPhil student in Oral Biosciences) won the Award for the Best Oral Presentation (Junior Category) for her research project titled “Discovery of novel antifungal small molecule for Candida infections“. Her supervisors are Professor Lakshman Samaranayake (Chair Professor of Oral Microbiology) and Dr C Jayampath Seneviratne (Research Assistant Professor in Oral Biosciences).
  • Miss Meng Zhang ( PhD student in Dental Materials Science) won the Award for the Best Poster Presentation (Junior Category) for her project titled “Effects of resin matrix composition on flexural properties of e-glass fiber reinforced composites”. Her supervisors are Dr Jukka Matinlinna (Associate Professor in Dental Materials Science), Dr Michael Botelho (Clinical Associate Professor in Oral Rehabilitation), and Dr Eija S Sailynoja (Honorary Associate Professor, HKU; Research Manager, Stick Tech Ltd, Turku, Finland).
The following students won research awards on 28-30 October 2011 in Singapore, at 25th IADRSEA Division Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) held in conjunction with the 22nd South East Asia Association for Dental Education (SEAADE):
  • Ms Thanuja DK Herath ( PhD student in Periodontology) won a IADR/Unilever Hatton Award (Senior Category, South East Asia Division) for her research project titled “Novel pathogenic mechanism of heterogeneous Pg-LPS structures in periodontal disease”. Her supervisors are Professor Li-jian Jin (Clinical Professor in Periodontology) and Dr Y Wang (HKU Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine), and her research collaborators are Dr CJ Seneviratne (Research Assistant Professor in Oral Biosciences), Professor R Darveau (University of Washington, Seattle, USA), and Professor CY Wang (UCLA School of Dentistry, Los Angeles, USA).
  • Dr DJ Epasinghe ( PhD student in Paediatric Dentistry) won a Best Paper in Dental Materials for her paper titled “Incorporation of proanthocyanidin into dental adhesive on resin dentine bonding”. Her supervisors are Dr Cynthia KY Yiu (Clinical Associate Professor in Paediatric Dentistry) and Prof Nigel M King (Clinical Professor in Paediatric Dentistry), Dr Michael F Burrow (Clinical Associate Professor in Operative Dentistry), and Prof FR Tay (USA).
Ms Thanuja DK Herath ( PhD student in Periodontology) won the Outstanding Poster Presentation Award for her project “Systems biology unravels a novel pathogenic mechanism of heterogeneous Pg LPS lipid A structures in chronic periodontitis” at the 4th Hiroshima Conference on Education and Science in Dentistry, Japan, October 2011. Her supervisors are Professor Li-jian Jin (Clinical Professor in Periodontology) and Dr Y Wang (HKU Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine), and her research collaborators are Dr CJ Seneviratne (Research Assistant Professor in Oral Biosciences), Professor R Darveau (University of Washington, Seattle, USA), and Professor CY Wang (UCLA School of Dentistry, Los Angeles, USA).
Dr Yong Chen (PhD student in Orthodontics) received a Travel Award from the Consortium for Globalization of Chinese Medicine (CGCM) to attend the 10th CGCM Meeting, Shanghai, China, 26-28 August 2011, to make a poster presentation titled “The antimicrobial effect of a traditional Chinese medicine mouthwash on patients undergoing orthodontic treatment with fixed appliance”. His co-authors were Dr Ricky WK Wong (primary supervisor), Professor Urban Hagg and Professor Colman McGrath (co-supervisors), Dr C Jayampath Seneviratne, and Professor Lakshman Samaranayake.
The following students won research awards on 16 March 2011 in San Diego, California, USA, at the 89th General Session and Exhibition of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), held in conjunction with the 40th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) and the 35th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research:
  • Dr Nihal Bandara ( PhD student in Oral Biosciences and Periodontology) won a 2011 IADR-Colgate “Research in Prevention” Travel Award for his poster presentation “Bacterial lipopolysaccharide modifies Candida albicans biofilm development at transcriptional level”. His supervisors are Dr R Watt, Professor LJ Jin, and Professor LP Samaranayake.
  • Ms Thanuja Herath ( PhD student in Periodontology) won a 2011 IADR-Colgate “Research in Prevention” Travel Award for her poster presentation “Systems biology unravels novel biomarkers in heterogeneous PgLPS-HGF interaction”. Her supervisors are Professor LJ Jin (Faculty of Dentistry) and Dr Y Wang (HKU Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine), and her research collaborators are Professor R Darveau (University of Washington, Seattle, USA), Dr CJ Seneviratne (Faculty of Dentistry), and Professor CY Wang (UCLA School of Dentistry, Los Angeles, USA).
  • Dr Otto LT Lam ( PhD student in Oral Rehabilitation) won a 2011 IADR Lion Dental Research Award for Junior Investigators for his research project “Evaluation of oral hygiene interventions in patients following acute stroke”. His supervisor is Professor C McGrath and his collaborators are Professor LP Samaranayake (Faculty of Dentistry), Dr LSW Li (Director of the Rehabilitation Unit at Tung Wah Hospital), and Professor A McMillan (former Chair Professor of Oral Rehabilitation).
Dr NB Parahitiyawa (former PhD student), Professor W Keung Leung ( Professor in Periodontology), Professor Li-jian Jin (Professor in Periodontology), andProfessor Lakshman Samaranayake ( Chair Professor of Oral Microbiology) were awarded the Faculty Research Output Prize at the 2010 HKU Award Presentation Ceremony for Excellence in Teaching and Research on 17 February 2011. The following students won research awards at the HKU Faculty of Dentistry and Sun Yat-sen University Guanghua School of Stomatology Conjoint Scientific Meeting and 1st Guangdong – Hong Kong Postgraduate Forum in Dental Science 2010, which were held in Guangzhou, China, on 14-16 December 2010:
  •  Dr Nihal Bandara (PhD student) was awarded the Colgate Best Oral Presentation Prize for his presentation titled “Bacterial quorum sensing molecules suppress in vitro Candida biofilm development”, co-authored with Dr Rory Watt, Professor Li-jian Jin and Professor Lakshman Samaranayake.
  • Dr Waruna Lakmal Dissanayaka (PhD student) was awarded the Colgate Best Poster Presentation Prize (Junior Category)for his poster titled “Endothelial cell modulation of dental pulp stem cell ondontogenic potential”, co-authored with Professor Li-jian Jin and Dr Cheng-fei Zhang.
  • Dr Pei-hui Ding ( PhD student) was awarded the Colgate Best Poster Presentation Prize (Junior Category) for her poster titled “Regulation of LBP in HOK stimulated by P gingivalis”, co-authored with Professor Richard P Darveau (University of Washington, Seattle, WA, USA) , Professor Cun-yu Wang (UCLA School of Dentistry, Los Angeles, CA, USA), and Prof Li-jian Jin.
  • Dr Si-su Mo ( PhD student) was awarded the Listerine Award in Investigative Periodontology for his poster titled “Subgingival spirochete diversity among healthy and chronic periodontitis subjects”, co-authored with Dr Meng You, Professor W Keung Leung, and Dr Rory Watt.
Dr Hannah DP Chua ( Postdoctoral Fellow in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) and Dr Wen-biao Zhang ( former PhD student) each won an Outstanding Thesis Award (2008-2009) from the HKU Faculty of Dentistry at the Graduation and Awards Ceremony on 7 December 2010. Dr Chua’s PhD thesis was titled “Distraction osteogenesis versus orthognathic surgery—which is better for cleft lip and palate patients?”; her supervisors were Professor Lim K Cheung, Professor Nabil Samman, and Drs M Bendeus, T Whitehill, and SMY Ho. Dr Zhang’s thesis was titled “Biochemical modulation and stem cell therapy for irradiated mandible”; his supervisors were Professor Lim K Cheung and Drs DTT Chua and LW Zheng.
Dr Nalaka YS Jayaratne (PhD Student in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery; supervisors, Dr Roger Zwahlen and Prof Lim K Cheung) has won a 2010-11 RGC-Fulbright Hong Kong Junior Research Scholar Award to study for 9 months at the Harvard Medical School, USA.
24th Annual Scientific Meeting of the IADR South East Asia Division, Taipei, Taiwan, 20-21 September 2010: Dr RAPM Perera (PhD student) won the Charles T Kean Memorial Award.
88th General Session & Exhibition of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), Barcelona, Spain, 14-17 July 2010:
  • Dr Fan Xue (PhD student) won Second Prize in the Bernard Sarnat Award Competition, Craniofacial Biology Group, for his presentation titled “Identification of SNP markers on 1p36 and association analysis of EPB41 with mandibular prognathism in a Chinese population”. His supervisors and co-authors are Dr Ricky WK Wong and Professor Bakr Rabie in the Discipline of Orthodontics.
  Ms TDK Herath (PhD student) won the IADR/Lion Young Investigator Dental Research Award for a presentation titled “Porphyromonas gingivalis LPS modulates immuno-inflammatory response in human gingival fibroblasts”, which was based on collaborative work with Professor RP Darveau (USA), Dr CJ Seneviratne (HKU), Dr Q Lu, and Professor CY Wang (USA). Her supervisors are Professor Li-jian Jin (Professor in Periodontology, HKU Faculty of Dentistry) and Dr Y Wang (HKU Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine).
Dr Fan Xue (PhD student) was the second-place winner of the “Bernard Sarnat Award Competition, Craniofacial Biology Group” at the 88th General Session & Exhibition of the International Association for Dental Research, Barcelona, Spain, 14-17 July 2010, for his poster presentation titled “Identification of SNP markers on 1p36 and association analysis of EPB41 with mandibular prognathism in a Chinese population”. Dr Michael Y Chen (MPhil student in Orthodontics) won the Second Prize in the e-Poster Competition of the Indian Orthodontic Society Mid-Year Convention 2010: Beyond Boundaries, held in Hong Kong and Macau from 10 to 16 April 2010. The poster was based on the project “Antimicrobial activity of prunes extract onStreptococcus mutans”, which was supervised by Dr Ricky Wong and co-supervised by Professor Urban Hägg, Dr CJ Seneviratne, Professor Lakshman Samaranayake, and Professor Colman McGrath.

2009

Dr Chen Kun (PhD student) was awarded the prize for “GSK Best Oral and Poster Presentation” at the HKU Faculty of Dentistry and Peking University School of Stomatology Conjoint Scientific Session, Hong Kong, in November 2009 for the oral presentation titled “LEPR is a predisposing factor of mandibular retrognathism: an SNP association and animal study” co-authored with his supervisors Dr Ricky WK Wong and Prof Bakr Rabie.
Dr Mei Lei ( PhD student in Oral Biosciences) was awarded the prize for “GSK Best Poster Presentation” at the HKU Faculty of Dentistry and Peking University School of Stomatology Conjoint Scientific Session, Hong Kong, in November 2009, for the poster presentation titled “Action of silver diamine fluoride upon multi-species cariogenic biofilm on dentin”, co-authored with Dr CJ Seneviratne and supervisors Dr Chun-hung Chu and Professor Edward CM Lo.
Dr Ke Jin (PhD student), representing the Biomedical and Tissue Engineering Research Group of the HKU Faculty of Dentistry, won the Poster Award and Travel Award at the 3rd Hiroshima Conference on Education and Science in Dentistry, 7-8 November 2009, for his presentation titled “BMP2 gene transfer through rAAV2 enhances osteogenic activity of BMSCs”, co-authored with Dr Li-wu Zheng and Professor Lim K Cheung (supervisors).
One student from the HKU Faculty of Dentistry won research awards at the 23rd Annual Scientific Meeting of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) – South East Asia Division, held on 22-24 September 2009 in Wuhan, China, in conjunction with the 2nd Meeting of the IADR Pan Asian Pacific Federation and the 1st Meeting of the IADR Asia/Pacific Region:
  • Dr Mei Lei (PhD student in Oral Biosciences) received the IADR / Unilever Hatton Travel Award (Senior Category, South East Asia Division), for her research project “Effects of silver diamine fluoride on caries-like lesions and cariogenic biofilms”. Her co-investigators were Dr Jayampath Seneviratne and Dr Chun-hung Chu (supervisor) and Prof Edward CM Lo (supervisor).
Dr Lei Mei (PhD student) won the Best Poster Presentation Award at the 31st Asia-Pacific Dental Congress, Hong Kong, 7-11 May 2009, for a poster titled “Interaction of multi-species cariogenic biofilm on artificial dentin caries lesion”, co-authored with Dr HK Yip, Dr CJ Seneviratne, Dr CH Chu (primary supervisor), and Professor ECM Lo (co-supervisor).
Dr Lei Chai (PhD 2008), together with Dr You-qiang Song, Dr Kwan-yat Zee, and Dr W Keung Leung, won the Best Poster Award at the Hong Kong Society for Immunology Annual Scientific Meeting on 18 April 2009, with a poster titled “Single nucleotide polymorphisms of complement component 5 and periodontitis”.
The following representative of the HKU Faculty of Dentistry won two research prizes at the 87th General Session and Exhibition of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), held in Miami, Florida, USA, from 1 to 4 April 2009:3
  • Dr Mahendra Perera (PhD student) won two awards: the 2009 IADR / Lion Dental Research Award, for the most outstanding and innovative research in Microbiology/Immunology, and the IADR/Colgate Research in Prevention Travel Award. His presentation, “Highly active antiretroviral therapy influences oral chemokine and cytokine profiles”, was based on his current PhD research, supervised by Dr Peter Tsang, Professor Anne McMillan, and Professor Lakshman Samaranayake.

2008

The following student received research prizes at the 22nd Annual Scientific Meeting of the International Association for Dental Research, South-East Asia Division (IADR/SEA), held in October 2008 in Manila, Philippines: IADR/SEA Best Paper Awards:
  • “Cariology and Mineralized Tissues” category – Dr Qing-hui Zhi (PhD student supervised by Professor Edward Lo, Dr Anut Itthagarun, and Dr HC Lin)
Dr Andrew Ow (PhD student) was awarded an Outstanding Poster Presentation Award at the 90th Annual Meeting, Scientific Sessions and Exhibition of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, held in Seattle, USA, on 16-20 September 2008 in conjunction with the Chinese Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Dr Jayampath Seneviratne (2006 PhD student) was awarded “IADR/Colgate Research in Prevention Travel Award” at the International Association for Dental Research Scientific Meeting, Toronto, Canada, July 2008. His supervisor is Professor L.P. Samaranayake.
