The HKU Faculty of Dentistry offers three levels of taught postgraduate programmes: Master of Science, Master of Dental Surgery, and Advanced Diploma, for various subject disciplines from among the following:Dental Materials Science, General Dentistry, Community Dentistry, Endodontics, Implant Dentistry, Paediatric Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics, Periodontology, and Prosthodontics.

  3. Applicants with qualifications from a university or comparable institution outside Hong Kong where the language of teaching or examination is not English are required to satisfy the University’s English Language requirements for admission. They should obtain:

    • a score of 550 or above (paper-based test) or 80 or above (internet-based test) in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); or
    • a minimum overall band of 6 with no subtest lower than 5.5 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or
    • grade C or above in either the Overseas General Certificate of Education, the International General Certificate of Secondary Education, or the Cambridge Test of Proficiency in English Language.

  5. The application deadline for the programmes in Community Dentistry, Endodontics, and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is January 31, 2014 and the application deadline for other programmes is 31 March, 2014.
  6. You can apply for more than one taught postgraduate programme at the same time. You should submit an online application at (with the required supporting documents to be submitted to the Faculty by post) and pay the application fee online for each application for a taught postgraduate programme.
  7. The application fee for each taught postgraduate programme is HK$300 (non-refundable). Payment of the application fee should be made online at Payment by cash will NOT be accepted.
  8. Please refer to the “Composition Fee” webpage on the Faculty website at for the fee structure of the different taught postgraduate programmes. The composition fees may be revised for subsequent year(s) of study.
  9. General supporting documents include:

    • Official final graduation transcript of completed undergraduate studies
    • Officially certified true copy/copies of certificate/s of undergraduate studies
    • Official final graduation transcript of complete postgraduate record
    • Officially certified true copy/copies of certificate/s of postgraduate studies
    • Official score report on an English Language proficiency test, such as TOEFL, IELTS, etc. (for applicants with qualifications from institutions outside Hong Kong where the language of instruction or examination is not English)

Please submit officially certified true copies of certificates and complete official transcripts of your undergraduate and postgraduate studies, if applicable, to our Faculty (also see FAQs 12 and 14). Documents that are not in English should be accompanied by a formally certified translation in English.
  11. It is a copy of a document that has been duly declared as a true copy before a notary public (e.g. Commissioner for Oaths at a City District Office, Hong Kong SAR Government), or one that has been certified by the appropriate office/department of your institution.
  12. You may upload soft copies of certificates and transcripts to the Online Application System to facilitate your application. But you still have topost the original or certified true copies of certificates and complete official transcripts to the Faculty.
