HKU Faculty of Dentistry collaborated with NGOS in Kindergarten Oral Health Program
The HKU Faculty of Dentistry has collaborated with ten kindergartens organized by different NGOs to provide free dental check-ups and apply silver diamine fluoride treatment for children with tooth decay at their schools. Among 2,508 children enrolling in the schools, 2,332 (93%) joined the program and received the dental examination. For caries control, silver diamine fluoride was applied on 2,286 decayed teeth of 702 children. After the treatment, the majority of the children reported no pain at all (71%) and some (11%) reported a little discomfort during the treatment. The kindergarten teachers reflected that their oral health knowledge and awareness were increased after joining the program. The project was successfully implemented and well accepted by children, parents, and kindergarten teachers.
The project was supported by the HKU Knowledge Exchange Fund 2018/19. More details can be obtained from the Faculty External Relations and Knowledge Exchange Unit or via email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Faculty of Dentistry at The University of Hong Kong is the premier dental school in Southeast Asia and the only institution in Hong Kong that provides undergraduate and postgraduate dental degrees.
