CETL eLearning Pedagogical Support Unit (EPSU) seminar: Virtual internationalisation in the early years of the curriculum: The International Peer Review (IPR) project (Speakers: Dr Susan Bridges & Dr CH Chu, 30 March 2012)
Since 2009-10, the Faculty of Dentistry HKU has engaged with other world-class dental institutions to enhance student learning experiences by more closely integrating educational technologies through a collaborative, online project (as featured in The Review 2011). A key conceptual argument for the International Peer Review (IPR) project was to move into a different sphere of blended learning with staff and students interacting through distributed networking across sites and institutions. The dedicated platform developed for the project (diastemas.net) was designed to build professional communities and meet key learning outcomes related to academic and professional excellence and greater understanding of others. This presentation will share how the thoughtful and principled inclusion of educational technologies within curriculum design can support student learning and motivate academic teaching staff. Evaluation of HKU's participation within the overall IPR community has shown strong benefits for student learning both in the discipline and in meeting the larger institutional goals that support preparation of university graduates to engage with an interconnected and rapidly changing global landscape. Dr Susan Bridges (Assistant Dean for Curriculum Development) (C) assisted Dr Karen Gardner (University of British Columbia, Canada) (R) and Prof Damien Walmsley (University of Birmingham, UK) (L) (photo), in organising a 3-hour Faculty Development Workshop at the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Scholarship of Teaching and Learning workshops in San Diego, USA, on 14 March 2011.
The 3-hour Faculty Development Workshop titled “Global dental digital learning communities: learning or social networking?” was based on the Universitas 21 project on International Peer Review (IPR) for dental undergraduates (www.diastemas.net).
