Academic Staff Joins the Dental Family

The Faculty extends its warmest regards to all newly joined academic staff and wishes them a great beginning and life at HKU.

Dr Deng comes from mainland China. After graduating from dental school at Sun Yat-Sen University, she attended the Periodontology Residency Program and obtained the master’s degree from Peking University. Thereafter, she pursued her PhD study at the University of Hong Kong. Before joining our faculty, she had practiced as a periodontist and received specialist training in Implant Dentistry at Shanghai PerioImplant Innovation Centre, Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

As a result of her varied clinical and research training background, and teaching experience in Continuing Professional Development programmes, Dr Deng gradually forged the goal to becoming an educator-clinician-scientist. “HKU Faculty of Dentistry is an exemplary academic establishment with a long history of excellence in the tripartite mission of education, discovery and clinical care. This position aligns with my career goal. I value this incredible career development opportunity. Besides, I appreciate our faculty's welcoming environment for research and knowledge exchange,” said Dr Deng.

Dr Deng has recently started teaching BDS and MDS in Periodontology. She expressed, “I see myself in some of the students. I enjoy interacting with students and learning from them. Students’ passion and enthusiasm for learning makes me happy.” She intends to expand her research in periodontal diagnostics and healthy aging in addition to teaching to contribute to the oral health and well-being of mankind.

Dr Deng remarked, “I put a lot of effort into my work and am highly focused. However, these qualities do not always correspond to productivity, so I do not necessarily need to work nonstop.” Outside of work, she has many interests. She is passionate about sports. She works out frequently to stay in shape and likes to go on hikes and play badminton and table tennis. Dr Deng, an animal lover, told us, “I am delighted to learn that Hong Kong is a pet-loving metropolis, despite the city's relatively small size.” In order to further her exploration of Hong Kong, she is currently learning Cantonese. “Being able to communicate in Cantonese would not only allow me to appreciate the local way of life fully but also help me get by in Hong Kong,” Dr Deng added.
