Our groundbreaking AI project, “Use of Smartphone and Artificial Intelligence for Detection Management of Gum Inflammation", has achieved remarkable success at the 10th Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. The project was honoured with the Second Prize in the Social Enterprise/Cultural & Creative Service Category, a testament to its innovation and potential impact.
By utilising mobile devices to provide a cost-effective preliminary screening solution for gum inflammation, the project aims to alleviate the burden on government healthcare systems and enhance primary healthcare services. The initiative also empowers non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to promote oral health in communities with limited access to dental services.
The competition was organised by the Hong Kong New Generation Cultural Association and co-organised by the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks, with support from the Innovation and Technology Commission. It served as a platform to showcase the groundbreaking research and entrepreneurial spirit of students across Hong Kong's universities.
The Faculty is immensely proud of our team's hard work, dedication, and innovative thinking.

Ms Chui Shan Chu, our PhD student in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, has been honoured with the Talent Development Scholarship by the HKSAR Government. This prestigious award recognises her outstanding achievements in innovation, science and technology.
Ms Chu’s well-deserved recognition stems from her winning of the first runner-up in the “2021 ROHTO Award HK” alongside with Dr Nikki Lee from HKU Department of Surgery. During the competition, they impressed the judges with innovative ideas from the research project: “Digital Healthcare Technology for Precision Oncology: Development of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-Driven Clinical Models to Predict Prognosis and select Treatments for Pan-cancer Applications” as they effectively conveyed the practical application and potential impact of their research ideas in the real world. Their project exemplifies the transformative power of digital healthcare technology in the field of precision oncology.
“I would especially like to express my gratitude to Professor Liwu Zheng (Clinical Associate Professor in Oral Medicine) for his support. Over the years, he gave me the flexibility to advance my research project,” said Ms Chu.
Congratulations again to Ms Chui Shan Chu on this prestigious accolade!
