The Faculty’s dedication to safeguarding the oral health of future generations is firmly reinforced. The "Jockey Club Children Oral Health Project" has successfully secured continued funding from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and is entering its second phase, which will run until August 2026.

The launching ceremony on July 23 was graced by the presence of Professor Chung-mau Lo, Secretary for Health of the HKSAR Government; Professor Xiang Zhang, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKU; and Ms Imelda Chan, Head of Charities (Healthy Community) of The Hong Kong Jockey Club.

The project team provides an onsite oral examination in a kindergarten.

Since 2019, the project has focused on improving the oral health of pre-school children in Hong Kong through outreach services and educational seminars. As of August 2023, it has delivered over 190,000 oral health examinations and administered 230,000 applications of silver diamine fluoride to control dental caries. Importantly, there were no adverse effects or cross-infections reported during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This is in line with the Government's policy of developing primary dental services to help citizens in preventing dental diseases and protecting their teeth. I would like to extend my gratitude to the Hong Kong Jockey Club for its donation, the excellent team of dentists from the HKU Faculty of Dentistry for providing check-ups and treatments to the students, and the participating schools for their support.

The second phase will continue to abide by the concept "Safeguard Our Children by Oral Care". Services will be expanded to foster pre-school children's awareness of oral health and provide teaching support and resources for kindergarten teachers.

We remain committed to benefitting more children and creating a greater impact in the community, ensuring every child has access to high-quality dental care, and achieving the principle that "prevention is better than cure".
