Abstract
The "tap and swipe" culture has touched every sphere of our lives. Orthodontics has embraced technology whole-heartedly, and this infusion has altered the face of our diagnostic, mechano-therapeutic, appliance-design, didactic and management protocols. The physical forms of most orthodontic entities are slowly but surely being replaced by digital and cloud applications that are 'up in the air', and have altered the dynamics of the 'orthodontic experience'. This presentation focuses on this trend and its impact on patient care. Three specific areas will be deliberated -Orthodontic Apps & Appliances, Imaging and Rapid Prototyping- with Evidence based information on these terrains.
The focus will be on-
  1. the clinician's and patient's unplugged responses to use of technology in different aspects of orthodontic care,
  2. A ringside view of different technology applications as existing today with a special focus on various orthodontic apps, imaging and 3D printing; and
  3. future developments that can change the face of orthodontic health-care.
Clinical applications and an Evidence Based Perspective on the efficacy of every application will be discussed.
Lecture Learning Objectives:
The attendees of this lecture should be able to …
  1. Classify the applications of technology in contemporary orthodontics.
  2. Assess Patient and Clinician knowledge, perceptions and preferences on use of specific technology applications in orthodontics.
  3. Know about various orthodontic apps that exist on Ios and Android platforms for orthodontic use.
  4. Learn about Rapid Prototyping and 3D applications in day to day clinical situations.
  5. Understand various imaging technologies and how they can be integrated for diagnosis and planning.
  6. Critically analyse and relate to futuristic applications of technology that can potentially change the face of orthodontic care.
