Earlier this year, the 9th Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition was organised, and the project “Artificial Intelligence for Dental Prosthesis Design” led by Dr Walter Lam, Clinical Assistant Professor in Prosthodontics and Dr Reinhard Chun-Wang Chau, Clinical Research Coordinator in Restorative Dental Sciences, won the Second Prize in the Startup Group.

Their project is focused on commercializing the use of artificial intelligence to automate the design of individualised artificial teeth, which aims to improve the treatment efficiency and enhance the patient experience. The AI technology used in this project was based on the 3D Generative Adversarial Network (3D-GAN) algorithm. The AI technology could learn the features of remaining teeth and automate the design of the shape of the artificial tooth resemble to that of a natural healthy tooth. This technology will simplify the treatment workflow for dentists in replacing a missing tooth, as the fitting process will require minimal adjustment and chairside time and patients can avoid prolonged clinic visits.

The Competition is organized by Hong Kong New Generation Cultural Association, and co-organized by Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks Corporation with the support from Innovation and Technology Commission.
