Beyond the Dental Chair: Partnering with Caregivers for Autism-Friendly Dental Care

Abstract

Children with developmental delays and disabilities such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often encounter extra challenges during their dental visits. The unfamiliar environment, the sounds of the equipment, the smell of the dental clinic rooms, the unexpected touches and the taste of the dental products may all bring up distress which leads to non-cooperation or even emotional outburst. To support these children, this seminar will cover what caregivers and dentists may attempt before, during and after the dental care services to soothe the children and encourage good behaviors. The sharing materials are adapted from the World Health Caregivers Skills Training program which serves particularly the caregivers of these children. This seminar will also discuss the skills of building dental care routines at home.

Biography

Professor Wong is an accredited registered clinical psychologist and an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Work and Social Administration at The University of Hong Kong. He has a background as a registered clinical psychologist specializing in suicide prevention research and mental health promotion and practice since 2003. His recent research projects encompass various areas, including youth social withdrawal behavior, the utilization of animals in educational and psychological interventions, positive youth development among local and non-Chinese young individuals, and family caregiving for individuals with psychological issues and people incarceration. His primary research objective is to foster social inclusion within our society and has published over 130 academic articles and book chapters. Additionally, Professor Wong is currently the General Secretary of the Asia Pacific Psychological Alliance, National Member Delegate of The International Union of Psychological Science, Council members and Fellows of the Hong Kong Psychological Society and the Hong Kong Professional Counselling Association. He serves as the Programme Director of the Master of Social Science (Counselling) and has received the Faculty of Social Science's Research Output and Knowledge Exchange Awards in 2015 and 2020 and 2024, respectively. Moreover, he serves as advisors and consultants of government bodies, i.e., the Education Bureau, and non-governmental organizations, e.g., MindHK, Zubin Foundation, and Youth Outreach.

Ms Cecilia Wong specializes in social evaluation and has her research interests in wellbeing and positive development. She has managed and advised on community projects in Hong Kong and Australia concerning youth mental health, professional learning, social inclusion, social impacts of urban renewal, and training of caregivers with children with neurodevelopmental disorders. She holds a master’s degree in counseling and is a certified master trainer of the World Health Organization Caregivers Skills Training program.

Biography

Dr Maxstein Abuzaid is a university educator and clinical practitioner at the restorative dental sciences division, Prince Philip dental hospital, faculty of dentistry, the University of Hong Kong. He is a visiting scholar at Tohoku University, Japan, member of the faculty of dental trainers, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd), fellow of International College of Dentists, and World Somatological Institute. He is Hong Kong key opinion leader for Ivoclar Vivadent. Since 2025, Dr. Abuzaid has been the recipient of two university teaching development grants in Hong Kong, reflecting his commitment to innovative and effective teaching methodologies. As a clinician, he has been awarded the best case in aesthetics from the Hong Kong society of aesthetic dentistry, recognizing his clinical skill and artistic approach to aesthetic dentistry. Prior to relocating to Hong Kong, Dr. Abuzaid gained extensive experience working as a university educator at various institutions and founded Dental Scenarios dental group, fostering a patient-centered, minimally invasive approach to aesthetic and restorative dentistry. He is an active international speaker, sharing his clinical insights and passion at numerous local and global dental conferences. Dr. Abuzaid is renowned for his innovative techniques, high-level skills, and dedication to mentorship. He is committed to nurturing the next generation of dental professionals, inspiring them through his expertise and fostering their talents to elevate the standards of restorative and aesthetic dentistry worldwide.
