Clinical Management of Multiple Canals in Mandibular Anterior Teeth and Premolars

Abstract

The success of root canal therapy depends on canal shaping, disinfection, and hermetic obturation, the three essential procedures. Nevertheless, locating the canal orifice and subsequent canal negotiation is the critical step; otherwise, canal shaping, disinfection, and obturation cannot be performed. The location of canals can be difficult, especially in single-rooted teeth, which are often thought to have only one canal. In fact, in lower incisors and premolars, two or more canals are not uncommonly found and treated. This talk will present a series of cases treated with a missing canal that were successfully retreated. Learning objectives are as follows: Radiographic signs indicating the second canal; technique for taking PA to disclose canals; skills for locating canals.

Biography

Professor Chengfei Zhang is a clinical professor of endodontics at the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Hong Kong (HKU). He serves as an editorial board member for the International Endodontic Journal, International Dental Journal, and Bioengineering. He obtained his DDS and his Ph.D. degree from Peking University. He joined the Faculty of Dentistry, HKU in 2009. His innovative research activities are internationally recognized, and he has been awarded the IADR William J. Gies Award for Biomaterials and Bioengineering Research, the Journal of Endodontics Award for Best Paper, and the IADR Distinguished Scientist Award. His research on endodontic etiopathogenesis and pulp regeneration has been funded by the Hong Kong RGC and by funding from the Chinese mainland. He has lectured on many occasions, both nationally and internationally, particularly at IADR/AADR and IADR-SEA meetings, and has published over 200 journal papers/book chapters.

The Radiated Patient: What Dentists Must Prevent, Manage, and Rehabilitate

Abstract

Head and neck radiotherapy can profoundly affect oral tissues, leading to xerostomia, mucosal injury, dysgeusia, radiation caries, periodontal breakdown, impaired healing, and—most critically for prosthodontic planning—osteoradionecrosis risk. Dentists play a pivotal role in minimizing complications through early risk assessment, preventive interventions, and timely management during and after treatment. This talk focuses on the dentist’s overall approach to the radiated patient: recognizing clinical red flags, planning care in coordination with oncology teams, and implementing evidence-informed strategies to preserve oral function and comfort despite salivary impairment and tissue vulnerability. Special attention is given to rehabilitation in a broad sense—how to support effective oral intake, improve denture/tooth-supported function when needed, address comfort and tolerance issues, and reduce the risk of breakdown or treatment-related complications. Practical guidance will be provided across the continuum of care, from pretreatment preparation to long-term follow-up.

Biography

Professor Pow is the Chief of the Division of Restorative Dental Sciences as well as the Postgraduate Programme Director and Clinical Associate Professor in Prosthodontics at the Faculty of Dentistry, The University of Hong Kong. As a registered specialist in Prosthodontics, Dr. Pow has actively worked in various aspects of clinical prosthodontics and implant dentistry for over 30 years. Professor Pow has published over 130 scientific and clinical articles. In 2015, he received the Judson C. Hickey Scientific Writing Award from the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry. In 2024 and 2025, he was recognized as one of the Top 2% Scientists Worldwide by Stanford University. He currently serves on the editorial boards of Clinical Oral Implants Research, Journal of Prosthodontics, International Journal of Prosthodontics, and International Dental Journal. Professor Pow holds leadership positions in various dental organizations. He served as the President of the Prosthodontics Group of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), President of the College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong (CDSHK), Chair of the Specialty Board in Prosthodontics of CDSHK, Chair of the Asia Regional Committee of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (RACDS) and President of Hong Kong Prosthetic Dentistry Society.
