Precision vs Reality: Understanding Deviations in Digitally Guided Immediate Implants

Abstract

The advancement and widespread adoption of digital surgical techniques in implantology have greatly enhanced the precision of implant placement, reducing surgical risks and enabling immediate restoration. Current digital technologies—including static surgical guides, dynamic navigation, and robotic-assisted systems—have shown excellent clinical outcomes. However, precision control is influenced not only by the inherent limitations of these technologies but also by site-specific factors, such as immediate implant placement. Unlike healed sites, immediate implantation sites exhibit asymmetric resistance from the buccal and lingual/palatal bone plates, leading to distinct error patterns when using guided techniques. This presentation will analyze the deviations associated with static guides, navigation, and robotic systems in immediate implant placement and discuss their clinical implications.

Biography

Professor Feng Wang obtained BDS (2005), MDS (2007), and PhD (2015) degrees from SJTU. She had been involved in dental implant treatment in Ninth People's Hospital, SJTU from 2007 to 2024. Professor Wang has an ongoing interest in digital implant surgery, implant related oral reconstruction. Her current basic research focuses on the development of congenital tooth loss and implant therapy. She is the Fellow of International Team for Implantology (ITI), Educational Committee Member of Foundation of Oral Rehabilitation (FOR) and Committee Member of Chinese Stomatological Association, implantology branch and oral genetic/rare diseases branch. She has published more than 70 papers in international peer-reviewed journals and now is on the editorial board of CIDRR.

Common Problems in Removable Prosthodontics

Abstract

Removable dental prostheses are extensively used for replacing missing teeth due to their effectiveness and versatility. They can serve as short-term measures or as definitive solutions for oral rehabilitation, providing functional and aesthetic benefits that enhance patients’ quality of life. Nonetheless, we often encounter challenges such as issues related to retention and stability, aesthetics, and patient comfort. Addressing these problems necessitates a clear understanding of potential complications and appropriate management strategies. This presentation aims to enhance clinicians’ competency in identifying common clinical issues associated with removable prostheses, improving clinical decision-making skills, and evaluating effective management protocols. By systematically analyzing potential complications and their solutions, practitioners can better navigate the complexities of removable prosthodontics, ultimately gaining success in treatment outcomes and patient satisfaction.

Biography

Professor Katherine C.M. Leung is a Clinical Associate Professor in Prosthodontics and President of the Geriatric Oral Research Group of the International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research. She has been a registered Specialist in Prosthodontics in Hong Kong since 2003. She holds a BDS (1994), an MDS with distinction (1996), and a PhD (2007), all from HKU, as well as the Fellowships of the College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong (FCDSHK, 2003) and the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (FHKAM, 2003). She has held various positions including the President of the College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong (2021–2022), Chairperson of the Specialty Board in Prosthodontics (2017–2019), President of the Hong Kong Prosthetic Dentistry Society (2010–2014), and Associate Dean for Taught Postgraduate Education and Chief of Clinical Services at the Institute for Advanced Dentistry—Multi-Specialty Clinic in the Faculty of Dentistry at The University of Hong Kong (2020-2025). She has published widely in various research fields including caries prevention, oral rehabilitation, geriatric dentistry and xerostomia, as well as in implant dentistry and dental education. She currently holds two General Research Funds from Research Grants Council and two Teaching Development Grants from HKU.
