Revasculaization Versus Apexification

Abstract

Trauma and caries occur at young ages are responsible for the pulpal and periapical pathologies in young immature teeth. Consequently, the root development is stopped and the root appears short and dentinal walls are thin. Teeth with such features are often prone to fracture and difficult to manage endodontically. The recent introduction of bioceramic material as well as advancement in tissue engineering and stem cell regeneration have shifted the treatment paradigm from conventional apexification using calcium hydroxide to bioceramic apexification and regenerative endodontic procedures. In this short sharing. In this short sharing, Dr. Travis will be sharing on the current issues and challenges, as well as the management in treating teeth with immature apex.

Biography

Currently, Dr Tan is the full-time Senior Clinical Practitioner (Endodontology) under the division of Restorative Dental Sciences, Faculty of Dentistry, HKU. Dr Tan is a registered Specialist in Endodontics with Malaysian Dental Council. He is the current member and fellow in Endodontics, conferred by Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He mainly involves in undergraduates’ clinical teaching and supervision and assists in postgraduates’ training.

Arresting Caries with Silver Diamine Fluoride

Abstract

Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) has attracted increasing attention in dental practice as a topical agent for arresting dental caries and managing dentine hypersensitivity. Its application is noninvasive, quick, simple, and well suited for a wide range of clinical settings. Evidence from laboratory studies and clinical trials suggests that SDF is effective in halting the progression of carious lesions and may offer advantages over other fluoride-based agents. The World Health Organization recognizes SDF as an essential medicine for preventing and controlling tooth decay. This lecture will discuss the clinical applications of SDF in contemporary caries management.

Biography

Professor Chu is Professor and Associate Dean for Research and Knowledge Exchange in the Faculty of Dentistry at The University of Hong Kong. He is Chair of the FDI Public Health Committee and Vice President of the Asia Oceania Federation of Conservative Dentistry. Professor Chu practices as a specialist in family dentistry, with a focus on the minimally invasive management of dental caries. He is passionate about teaching, and many of his mentees have become professors and/or recognized among the world’s top 2% scientists. His mission is to glorify his Christian faith through his career.
