The HKSAR Department of Health (DH) announced the commencement of a territory-wide Oral Health Survey 2021 (OHS 2021) in November. The DH has commissioned the HKU Faculty of Dentistry to conduct questionnaire interviews and oral examinations for OHS 2021.
The Faculty will send several oral health outreach teams to the community to conduct the oral health survey. Each team has a registered dentist and one or two team assistants, and they will carry a staff identity card issued by the DH for identification. The territory-wide survey project will take about a year. It targets five population groups, namely 5-year-old children, 12-year-old youths, adults aged between 35 and 44, elderly aged 65 to 74 and elderly aged 65 or above who are receiving long-term care services. Starting from December 2, the Faculty has been conducting surveys on the adults’ group. Interviewees primarily answer a questionnaire and have an oral examination at Prince Philip Dental Hospital or their home. The outreach teams will be going to visit the place of residence, school or respective service unit of interviewees in different age groups.
The registered dentist in the team will focus on checking dental caries, gingival problems and dental erosion of the interviewees. After the interview, they will receive a brief dental report and professional advice from the dentist.
Professor Edward Lo, Chair Professor of Dental Public Health, was delighted about the commission from the DH to participate in the OHS 2021. “HKU Faculty of Dentistry is the only dental school in Hong Kong. We not only provide quality education, research and innovation but endeavour to serve and contribute to the local community and promote oral healthcare through collaborations with the government and different institutions (academic or non-academic),” Professor Lo said.
