Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Faculty of Dentistry, The University of Hong Kong (HKU), a gala dinner was organised and attended by 240 guests. Government officials, dental professionals, generous benefactors, as well as alumni, staff and students shared the joyous moments of this important milestone on 23 November 2022 at the Harbour Grand Hong Kong Hotel.
Officiating guests were Professor Chung Mau Lo, BBS, JP, Secretary for Health of HKSAR Government; Ms Priscilla Pui Sze Wong, SBS, JP, Council Chairman, HKU; Professor Xiang Zhang, President and Vice-Chancellor, HKU; Dr Hon David Tzit Yuen Lam, Legislative Council Member – Functional Constituency Medical and Health Services; Dr Raymond Kin Man Lee, JP, Chairman of the Dental Council of Hong Kong; and Professor Thomas Flemmig, Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, HKU.
Professor Chung Mau Lo congratulated the Faculty on its achievement, “Faculty of Dentistry is young and strong. Established only 40 years ago in 1982, the Faculty has risen to the top 2 dental school in the world according to the recent QS ranking by subject. This international recognition is a testimony of the Faculty’s renowned reputation. As an alumnus, a member and supporter of the university, and as a Hong Kong citizen, I think we should all be very proud of this achievement.”

Professor Xiang Zhang in his speech stated that “With the support of the University and the Prince Philip Dental Hospital, the Faculty will continue to pioneer innovative solutions and improve access to high-quality oral healthcare for everyone in Hong Kong and the world.”
Professor Thomas Flemmig, Dean of Dentistry at his address welcomed all the guests, he said, “Today, our Faculty educated more than half of the PhD students in Oral Sciences enrolled in all dental schools in the United States combined. Our BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) programme is so competitive that the JUPAS admissions scores of our first-year students are the highest among all programmes in HKU. Our established dental colleagues are distinguished, but I can tell you that the next generation of dentists will be even more successful.”
An all-star line-up of talents also helped make the night more special. Guests enjoyed the dance performance by Mr Jacky Wong, BDS Year 4; Dental Song performed by Mr Francis Yiu, BDS Year 6, with his impeccable violin skills, as well as piano and singing performance by Dr Alfred Hui (BDS 2012) and Mr Wong Kei, BDS Year 4.
The Faculty is grateful to all of the guests who joined the event. In the past four decades, the Faculty of Dentistry has been nurturing dental professionals and serving the community by seeking discovery and innovation and providing dental services. In the future, the Faculty will continue “to be the global leader in oral health sciences, education and professional care, delivering impact through innovation, interdisciplinarity and internationalization.”
