Inspire Generation of Dental Professionals
Supporters of “Name a Dental Simulator” visit Simulation Laboratory
In 2018, the Faculty of Dentistry launched “Name A Dental Simulator” fundraising campaign and has received positive responses. To extend the Faculty’s greatest gratitude to our supporters’ contribution to our development and celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Faculty, a Simulation Laboratory (SimLab) visit was organised on 16 August 2022.
Professor Thomas Flemmig, Dean; Professor CH Chu, Association Dean (External Relations) and Dr Mike Leung, Assistant Dean (External Relations) of the Faculty of Dentistry welcomed the visitors. Professor Flemmig said, “The Faculty is grateful to donors’ generosity which contribute to the development of the Simulation Laboratory.” The dental simulators in the laboratory are vital to the training of dental students and serve a wide variety of purposes, from teaching and learning to assessing patients. With the patronage of supporters, these simulators bring the Faculty equipment up to the leading edge of technology which assists in enhancing the students’ clinical skills.
At the event, donors toured around the SimLab, chit-chatted with Bachelor of Dental Surgery Year 6 students, as well as mixed and mingled with each other. Some supporters cum alumni were delighted to meet their teachers and friends. The visit ended with appreciation and joy.
The Faculty is introducing 10 to 20 new simulator units to cope with the increased intake of Bachelor of Dental Surgery and related teaching. We call for your generosity. With a donation of HK$50,000, supporters will be able to select the simulator that will bear a plaque engraved with your name or the name of your chosen person. By supporting the Faculty’s development, your name and words will become part of an enduring legacy, visible and inspiring to many generations of dental professionals.
Professor Thomas Flemmig explains to Dr Patrick Poon on how the simulator units can assist in enhancing students’ clinical skills
‘It only takes a spark to get a fire going, and soon all those around can warm up in its glowing.’ The legacy of our Faculty carries on with the continuous support from the alumni, and it is our honour to be part of them.
Dental Simulation Laboratory is a symbolic origin where our professional life and friendship begin. Operational and surgical skills are acquired among peers in a virtual environment, with every effort to enhance clinical safety and high-quality treatment. Forty years of perseverance in dental education bloomed from Prince Philip Dental Hospital, and the excellence of HKU Dentistry is now world recognized.
I love my Faculty as they nourished me with the knowledge and skills to become a competent dentist. The SimLab and the strong pedagogy of all the professors and tutors enhanced and helped me learn the necessary clinical skills for daily dental practice. It is my turn to give back to the Faculty by participating in the advancement of the Faculty’s equipment and training.
Supporting the campaign gives me immense pleasure and honour to give to my alma mater. I would like to thank the Faculty of Dentistry, especially during my post-graduate training where I obtained the specialist in Paediatric Dentistry and good friendships with other colleagues.
