Ethnic Minority Dental Service with Unity in Diversity 2026

HKU Faculty of Dentistry Ethnic Minority Dental Service with Unity in Diversity 2026

The HKU Faculty of Dentistry in collaboration with the Society of Preventive Dentistry of Hong Kong (SPDHK) and Unity in Diversity, organized a community outreach programme at Man Kiu Association Primary School on January 24, 2026. The initiative aimed to provide essential oral health services to families from ethnic minority groups in Hong Kong, many of whom face challenges in accessing healthcare services.

Led by Dr Olivia Zhang, a dedicated team of 13 dental students offered free basic oral examinations to approximately 40 participants. Topical fluoride applications were also administered to those requiring preventive treatment. According to information obtained from the detailed charting, educational sessions were also conducted to promote good oral hygiene practices, tailored to each participant’s individual needs. Our dental students used teeth models to demonstrate proper toothbrushing and interdental cleaning techniques to prevent common oral health diseases, with additional time for participant practice. Attendees were guided to integrate these evidence-based practices into their daily routines for sustained oral health benefits.

The Faculty of Dentistry sincerely thanks all Faculty members, professional dentists, enthusiastic students, and committed volunteers from the partnering organisations. Their teamwork, compassion, and generosity were essential in delivering meaningful dental care and promoting health equity. This collective effort not only enhanced participants’ oral health awareness but also reflected HKU Dentistry’s continuing dedication to serving the diverse communities of Hong Kong through impactful outreach and preventive education.
