GUM AI Technology for Elderly

HKU Faculty of Dentistry, GUM AI GUM AI Technology for Elderly

The AI-powered community oral health initiative aims to improve access to preventive dental care for underserved older adults in Hong Kong. With a rapidly ageing population, high rates of gum disease, and limited access to affordable dental services, the programme combines professional dental outreach with innovative artificial intelligence (AI) technology to address oral health inequalities.

Led by Professor Walter Lam and his team, the initiative developed an AI system capable of detecting gum inflammation from photographs of teeth and gums. In 2023, this technology evolved into "Gum AI", a mobile health application that analyses smartphone images and instantly provides colour-coded assessments of gum health. The tool enables quick, accurate, and accessible screening within community settings.

Since 2022, the programme has expanded through a three-stage approach: delivering free oral health screenings and education, integrating AI-powered smartphone assessments, and training volunteers and students to use the technology independently. Working alongside community partners, dental professionals provide examinations, personalised oral hygiene advice, and basic care during outreach events.

The initiative had benefited more than 10,000 Hong Kong residents, including over 5,000 older adults, through community outreach activities. Clinical studies have also demonstrated significant improvements in oral hygiene, overall oral health, confidence, and social engagement, highlighting the programme’s positive and sustainable impact on community wellbeing.
