HKU names Professor Chu as incumbent of prestigious endowed professorship in dentistry
The University appointed Professor Chun-hung Chu as a successive endowed professor.
An endowed professorship is one of the highest honours awarded by the University to distinguished academic staff at HKU, honouring their scholarly achievements and supporting their continued contributions to teaching, research, and academic leadership. This spring, the University appointed Professor Chun-hung Chu, the HKU Faculty of Dentistry’s Associate Dean for Knowledge Exchange and Development, Chair Professor of Family Dentistry, and Clinical Professor in Cariology, as the holder of the Kingboard Professorship in Advanced Dentistry.
The appointment commends Professor Chu’s commitment to fostering excellence in dental education, conducting pioneering and influential work in dental research, and advancing knowledge exchange to improve oral health and well-being in society. His expertise and contributions have previously been rewarded by HKU.
As an educator, Professor Chu teaches dental students and supervises postgraduate students. Some of his students have become full or associate professors at universities, and some are listed among the Stanford/Elsevier Top 2% Scientists. His dedication to mentorship was recognised with the HKU Outstanding Research Student Supervisor Award in 2022.
A prolific scholar in dental and oral health sciences, Professor Chu has a Google Scholar h-index of 80 and over 350 publications to his name. As principal investigator, he has received external grants worth a total of approximately USD 20 million (~HKD 157 million). Through active translation of his research on applying silver diamine fluoride to arrest tooth decay, Professor Chu has helped to improve oral health among a significant proportion of preschoolers in Hong Kong, earning his outreach team the HKU Knowledge Exchange Excellence Award in 2021.
Professor Chu’s expertise is internationally recognised: he serves on the editorial boards of several leading dental journals and reviews research grants for funding agencies around the world. He currently holds prominent leadership roles in the global dental community, serving as the Chair of the FDI World Dental Federation Public Health Committee and as the Vice President of the Asian-Oceanian Federation of Conservative Dentistry.
“I would like to express my gratitude to my Lord Jesus Christ for His grace and to my family for their unwavering support. I also extend my thanks to Kingboard Chemical Holdings Limited for their generous donation, which has greatly advanced research and development in dental science, positively impacting oral health in Hong Kong and beyond,” said Professor Chu.
