HKU Dentistry named world No. 2 in QS Subject Rankings in 2025
The HKU Faculty of Dentistry has further elevated its reputation as a global leader in dental education and innovation, climbing to second place in the QS World University Rankings by Subject (Dentistry) for 2025, up from third in 2024.
To celebrate this accomplishment, Professor Lijian Jin, then-Acting Dean of Dentistry, hosted a special Faculty reception on 14 March 2025, welcoming Faculty members, staff, students, and guests from Hong Kong’s professional dental community. The gathering marked the milestone with pride and appreciation, acknowledging the breadth of contributions that helped make the success possible. After formally announcing the latest QS ranking, Professor Jin expressed deep gratitude for the unity of vision, mutual support, and collaborative spirit behind the collective achievement. He also reaffirmed HKU Dentistry’s ongoing goal of empowering and nurturing forward-looking dental professionals who will shape the future of the field.
Professor Lijian Jin hosted a special Faculty reception to celebrate the latest QS ranking.
“Securing a top-two position this year, and maintaining the highest ranking in Asia since records began, has been achievable only through consistent teamwork and a concerted effort,” said Professor Jin, reflecting on the event. “This recognition stands as a tribute to the unwavering loyalty and whole-hearted dedication of our clinicians, scientists, professional support staff, students, alumni, allies, and collaborators, as well as support from HKU and the Prince Philip Dental Hospital.”
Cheers to our excellent achievements!
The QS Dentistry rankings assess institutions across four key indicators: graduate employability, academic reputation, and citations per paper and h-index citations, which both reflect research output and influence. In the 2025 results, HKU Dentistry earned high scores of 85.1, 72.3, 97.2, and 95.6, respectively, leading to a robust overall score of 88.0. This strong performance continues a long-standing tradition of excellence that has placed the HKU Faculty of Dentistry among the top three dental schools globally in nine of the past 11 years, demonstrating the Faculty’s enduring commitment to high-calibre dental training and impactful research.
Looking ahead, HKU Dentistry will continue to pioneer world-class progress in dental and oral health sciences. “Building on this year’s recognition, we will actively pursue new opportunities for growth, collaboration, and innovation, while responding to the evolving needs of the profession and society,” said Professor Jin. “Our efforts will support the Hong Kong Government’s healthcare policies and the World Health Organization’s oral health strategy and action plan, reinforcing our Faculty’s role and relevance in advancing oral health both locally and globally.”
