The Faculty warmly congratulates Professor Richard Su, Clinical Professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and team members Professor John Adeoye, Professor Jane Pu and Professor Liwu Zheng on receiving the Faculty Knowledge Exchange Award 2025 for their project, “Artificial Intelligence-based Web Tools to Improve Oral Cancer Screening and Clinical Decision-making”.
Established in 2011, the Faculty KE Awards recognise initiatives that turn academic expertise into tangible benefits for the community, industry and partner organisations.
Their award-winning project addresses oral cancer, a major public health challenge in which delayed diagnosis often leads to poorer outcomes and more intensive treatment. To support earlier detection, the team developed AI-powered web tools that help healthcare professionals identify potentially malignant and cancerous oral lesions and make better-informed clinical decisions.
Built on large datasets of clinical images and expert-annotated cases, the browser-based platform supports lesion risk assessment, referral prioritisation and follow-up planning. The project has strong potential to improve early detection, optimise specialist services and reduce disparities in access to expert care, while promoting evidence-based screening through training, outreach and educational resources.
