Mentorship Programme Empowers HKU Dental Students
A happy night between students and their mentors
The HKU Faculty of Dentistry and The University of Hong Kong Dental Alumni Association (HKUDAA) have reaffirmed their commitment to nurturing future dental professionals with the launch of the Mentorship Programme for BDS Year 3 students (Class of 2029). The inauguration was held on 16 January 2026 at JEN Hong Kong by Shangri-La, with generous support from Haleon as the event sponsor.
Building on the success of previous cohorts, the programme continues to serve as an important bridge between students and the wider dental community. It brings together dedicated mentors from across the profession who are keen to share their knowledge, clinical experience and personal journeys in dentistry. By connecting BDS 3 students with alumni and practising dentists, the initiative helps students gain a clearer understanding of life beyond the classroom and simulation lab.
Throughout the year, mentors will provide personalised guidance tailored to each student’s interests and aspirations. Discussions may cover specialty choices, career planning, patient care and practice management, while offering students a supportive environment in which to ask questions and explore different career pathways. Clinic observation visits will further enhance the experience by giving mentees first-hand exposure to the realities of daily dental practice.
The BDS students and the dental alumni share a joyful night
The Mentorship Programme is designed as a two-way learning journey. While students benefit from the wisdom and encouragement of experienced practitioners, mentors also gain fresh perspectives and renewed inspiration from engaging with the next generation. These exchanges strengthen the sense of community within the Faculty and reinforce the values of professionalism, compassion and lifelong learning that define the HKU dental family.
The Faculty extends its heartfelt thanks to all mentors for their generous commitment, to HKUDAA for its steadfast partnership in student development, and to Haleon for supporting this meaningful initiative. As the Class of 2029 begins its clinical journey, the programme will serve as a valuable guide in building not only clinical confidence and professional competence, but also the resilience, integrity and empathy essential for a fulfilling career in dentistry.
