General Research Fund

Academic Staff Project Benefit Mankind Being Supported

The Research Grants Council has announced the results for the General Research Fund (GRF) exercises for 2022/2023. In the latest competition, five academic staff received the GRF. The lists of successful GRF are as followings:

Professor CH Chu
Principal Investigator
Professor CH Chu

Clinical Professor in Cariology

Project Title

Arresting dental caries with a novel silver complex fluoride

About the Project

To evaluate the effects of the SCF solution on 1) the architecture, viability, and kinetics of a multispecies cariogenic biofilm and 2) the mineral and organic content and colour change in carious teeth.

Dr Richard Su
Principal Investigator
Dr Richard Su

Clinical Associate Professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Project Title

Comprehensive validation of an Artificial Intelligence-enabled skull CT segmentation for computer-assisted head and neck reconstruction

About the Project

To validate the AI-enabled skull CT segmentation with dry human skulls anatomical ground truth; to validate the AI-enabled skull CT segmentation with a surgical database of computer-assisted head and neck reconstruction; and to verify the impact of the AI-enabled skull CT segmentation on the performance of computer-assisted head and neck reconstruction.

Dr Yanqi Yang
Principal Investigator
Dr Yanqi Yang

Clinical Associate Professor in Orthodontics

Project Title

Identifying the role of Fto in modulating the transition of pro-inflammatory periodontium towards recovery in mechanical microenvironment

About the Project

To investigate the function of m6 A “eraser” Fto in the recovery of periodontium and the mechanism by which it regulates Socs1 m6 A methylation. This study may provide opportunities to develop novel therapeutic strategies for safe and effective orthodontic treatments for patients with periodontitis

Professor Cynthia Yiu
Principal Investigator
Professor Cynthia Yiu

Clinical Professor in Paediatric Dentistry

Project Title

A novel calcium strontium silicate cement for dentin-pulp complex regeneration

About the Project

Results of this project will provide new insights into the mechanisms underlying the odontogenic and immunomodulatory effects of CSR cement. Successful dentin-pulp regeneration via CSR cement will revolutionize endodontic therapy by reversing diseased tooth back to a healthy state, delivering a promising solution to endodontic diseases.

Professor Chengfei, Zhang
Principal Investigator
Professor Chengfei, Zhang

Clinical Professor in Endodontics

Project Title

EphrinB2 activation modulates the actions of TGF-β/Smad and Ang-1/Tie2 signaling in regulating DPSC-induced vascular formation

About the Project

This study will be the first to unravel the associations of EphrinB2/EphB4, TGFβ/Smad, and Ang-1/Tie2 signaling on the vascular maturation process by DPSCs. The new knowledge may bring much needed insight on dentin/pulp regeneration
