A Half-day Programme for the Talented Secondary Students
Around 100 secondary school students learned more about the dental world
HKU Medical and Healthcare Academy for the Talented 2022, supported by the Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Education and Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, is a programme designed for senior secondary students to explore their potentials and interests in medical and health sciences professions. It allows students to gain an insight into their career prospects and allows them to interact with Faculty members and leading experts.
Elements of Science, Technology and Art
“Welcome to The Faculty of Dentistry, the world of Science, Technology and Art!” a warm welcome was given by Dr Mike Leung, Assistant Dean in External Relations cum Admissions, as fellow tutors unveiled the programme on 18 July 2022. He introduced the Faculty of Dentistry, and the learning of the Bachelor of Dental Surgery programme to around 100 secondary school students gathering at the Lecture Theatre I.

Dr Andy Yeung, Tutor in Oral Radiology then spoke of the scientific aspect of dentistry by observing Cone Bean Computed Tomography and Orthopantomography to distinguish dental problems. Students excitedly engaged in the quiz at the end of the lecture. Five lucky participants were over the moon when receiving Philips Sonicare Toothbrush during the lucky draw.
On the other hand, Dr Mike Leung presented the importance of 3D printing, virtual planning and technology and their roles in improving dental treatment outcomes. He also led the students to master the suturing skill at Simulation Laboratory. Students were excited about their hands-on medical stitching experience at the Faculty’s iconic learning facility. Some of them demonstrated their potential in suturing. “It doesn’t really matter if you don’t have the artistic skill while suturing because practice makes perfect”, stressed Dr Leung.

World Class Tour
Ten Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) Year 6 students were recognized for volunteering to guide secondary students to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic, Paediatric Dentistry Clinic, Comprehensive Dental Care Clinics, Dental Technology Laboratory and Dental Library of the Faculty. BDS students explained the learning and patient care conducted at these advanced clinics and facilities, which have provided excellent support to world-class education for many years. Secondary students also learned more about university life at the Faculty while intermingling with BDS students.
Another similar Programme was scheduled on 22 August 2022. The Faculty is committed to attracting and nurturing students by fostering advanced lifelong oral health learning and professional care for the community. We look forward to seeing these familiar faces at HKU soon!
