In Loving Memory
We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Prof Lim Kwong Cheung on 19 November 2022 at the age of 64.
After his graduation from BDS in Glasgow, Professor Cheung joined the Faculty as a Lecturer (Clinical) in 1983. He was one of the youngest staff members at that time. From 1987 to 1988, he pursued advanced training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Adelaide, Australia under Professor Henk Tideman. Professor Cheung returned to the Faculty in 1988 as Lecturer (Clinical) and was later promoted to Chair Professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He served as Associate Dean (Research and Discovery) of the Faculty and Discipline Head of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Professor Cheung was world-renowned for his achievements in orthognathic surgery, maxillofacial reconstruction, and distraction osteogenesis. He has published over 200 scientific papers and over 260 conference abstracts. He contributed significantly to the education of oral and maxillofacial surgeons in Hong Kong and beyond. He served as Education Executive Officer of the Asian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and was the Hong Kong Representative on its Asia Pacific Board. He was also the Founding Member and the first Chairman of the South-East Asia Region of the Strasbourg Osteosynthesis Research Group. He also held honorary professorships at universities in Australia, Mainland China, India, Malaysia, and Thailand.
Professor Cheung was a distinguished academic surgeon who passionately dedicated his efforts to the Faculty of Dentistry of The University of Hong Kong and the dental community. He will be dearly missed. May we offer our deepest condolences to his family and friends.
In loving memory of Brenda McMillan (née Simpson), we are saddened to announce her passing on 8 August 2022, aged 79.
Brenda brought her knowledge and skills from Canada to the newly established Faculty of Dentistry in Hong Kong where she was the founding Tutor of the Dental Surgery Assistant curriculum. She led a team of Dental Surgery Assistant Instructors and together they provided high-quality training to local trainees. The Faculty of Dentistry is indebted to her invaluable contribution and dedication to the education of Dental Surgery Assistants.
She and her husband Duncan McMillan (Reader in Prosthetic Dentistry) had their rewarding years academically at The University of Hong Kong. They shared their many interests such as jazz, dancing, food and wine. They left Hong Kong in mid 80s, to take their expertise to other far-flung places including the Middle East, Trinidad, and Spain where they eventually retired. After Duncan passed away in 2002, Brenda returned to Canada to spend time with her family and friends.
Brenda was a very calm and thoughtful person. She will be remembered for her very sunny disposition, smile, and twinkle in her eye!
