Professor Samaranayake receives Hon DSc from Yerevan State Medical University

Professor Lakshman Samaranayake, the Past Dean and Emeritus Professor of the Faculty of Dentistry, has been awarded the prestigious Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) by the Yerevan State Medical University (YSMU) of Armenia for his remarkable contributions to the fields of oral and medical microbiology, as well as his outstanding achievements in research and dental education. Notably, he is the first Asian recipient of this distinguished honour.

With an illustrious academic career spanning over four decades, Professor Samaranayake has published over 400 scientific articles that have garnered more than 34,000 citations. His seminal textbooks on the oral microbiome, translated into multiple languages and editions, are internationally acclaimed and widely revered by students and scholars across the globe.

It is a great honour to receive this wonderful award in recognition of my lifelong achievements in surgical sciences and research, and to be the first recipient from the Asian region.

YSMU is one of the oldest universities in the Eastern European region with a rich history surpassing a century. It has over 1,200 medical specialists and trains students from 33 counties. Previous recipients of this esteemed award include Nobel laureates and influential figures who have made significant contributions to humanitarian endeavours.

Expressing his deep appreciation, Professor Samaranayake said, “It is a great honour to receive this wonderful award in recognition of my lifelong achievements in surgical sciences and research, and to be the first recipient from the Asian region.”
