Tour at the Comprehensive Dental Clinics

Foster Understanding on BDS Learning During the Pandemic

The 5th COVID-19 wave affected all walks of life and posed considerable challenges for the education sector. In order to enhance understanding among the Faculty of Dentistry and the Dental Council of Hong Kong, the government organisation in charge of the registration and regulation of the dental profession, and the learning of Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) students, the Faculty organised a visit to the Prince Philip Dental Hospital (PPDH) for the Dental Council Representatives on 21 April 2022.

Professor Thomas Flemmig, Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, welcomed Dr Raymond Lee, Chairman and Dr Ernest Foo, Chairman of Education and Accreditation Committee of Dental Council Hong Kong at the Deanery. Professor Gary Cheung, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Education), then toured with Dr Lee and Dr Foo at the Comprehensive Dental Clinics, where BDS students receive clinical training across all dental disciplines and provide patient care under the supervision of experienced clinicians.

During the tour, Professor Cheung presented the Faculty’s comprehensive and integrated curriculum and its effects on students’ clinical skills. Under the curriculum, students work collaboratively with dental surgery assistants and dental hygienists. He also stressed the importance of the protocol implemented by the Faculty to minimize the spread of virus at clinical training while maximize the hands-on learning of the students.

The tour and meeting foster understanding and communication, especially on BDS learning under the pandemic. The Faculty is committed to providing excellent dental training despite the challenges.

After the tour, they attended a meeting at Lecture Theatre II in which Professor Cynthia Yiu, Director of PPDH spoke on COVID Protocols; Ms Elaine Wong, Comptroller of PPDH talked about patient attendance; Professor Flemmig delivered the clinic conference for staff, and Professor Gary Cheung shared clinical experience of BDS Year 6 student. The meeting was concluded after the Q&A session.
