Undergraduate Research Programme Facilitates BDS Students to Conduct Research

An undergraduate research team supported by the Faculty’s Undergraduate Research Programme (URP) won a poster presentation in December 2021 at the Hong Kong International Dental Expo and Symposium (HKIDEAS) organised by Hong Kong Dental Association.

The winning presentation of the research study titled “Accuracy And Safety Of In-House Surgeon-Designed Three-Dimensional Printed Patient Specific Implants For Wafer-Less Le Fort I Osteotomy” provides insight on applying in-house 3D-printing surgical guides and plates to assist with orthognathic surgery. It also suggests a more economical alternative in comparison to outsourcing the design and printing of such equipment to external laboratories. In addition, with this latest technology, surgeons can enjoy better control in designing their own surgical guides.

The research team consists of Dr Jasper Leung (Class 2021), Dr Alvin Li (Class 2021), Mr Nathan Teo (Class 2024) and Ms Karen Leung (Class 2024), supervised by Dr Mike Leung, Clinical Associate Professor in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery of the Faculty of Dentistry.

You can enjoy the updates of constant advancement in technology and extend self-directed learning outside of the material taught in class. More importantly, to have the opportunity to share research findings to a broader audience
Dr Jasper Leung

This research project is supported by the Faculty’s URP which allows Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) students to conduct research projects under the supervision of the Faculty’s teaching staff. One of the components of the URP is to deliver the research findings and share the experience at local/international conferences.

Dr Jasper Leung and his team members encourage other BDS students to actively participate in URP as it is a great opportunity to delve into unexplored topics in the dental field and undergraduate students will be benefited from the process of conducting a research project. “You can enjoy the updates of constant advancement in technology and extend self-directed learning outside of the material taught in class. More importantly, to have the opportunity to share research findings to a broader audience”, he concluded.
