Guangdong field trip offers first-hand look at oral healthcare and innovation in Mainland China

Professor Lijian Jin leads over 30 professors, taught postgraduate students, and dental surgery assistants on a 1-day field trip to Guangdong Province.

Staff and students of the HKU Faculty of Dentistry’s Institute for Advanced Dentistry Multi-Specialty Clinic (IAD-MSC) embarked on a 1-day field trip on 26 April 2025 to Guangdong Province, offering participants a unique window into the rapidly evolving landscape of dental care and technology in Mainland China. Led by Professor Lijian Jin, then-Acting Dean of Dentistry, the delegation comprised over 30 professors, taught postgraduate students, and dental surgery assistants.

The journey began at The University of Hong Kong – Shenzhen Hospital’s Department of Dental Surgery, where Professor Gary Cheung, Chief of Service, greeted the group. Participants toured both the hospital’s main dental outpatient clinics and the International Medical Centre, gaining first-hand insights into clinical environments, patient management, and operational workflows within a major public hospital. Professor Cheung also delivered an enlightening overview of China’s healthcare system highlighting the adoption of cutting-edge clinical technologies and their transformative impact on patient care.

In the afternoon, the delegation toured Modern Dental Group Limited’s Dongguan laboratory. As one of the world’s largest dental laboratories, it showcased state-of-the-art digital workflows and the integration of artificial intelligence in dental manufacturing. Students had the rare opportunity to engage directly with company technicians, exploring innovative production processes that are shaping the future of oral rehabilitation and prosthodontics.

The field trip drew enthusiastic feedback from participants, who described it as an eye-opening experience that broadened their perspectives on clinical practice, dental education, and research in the context of the dental profession in Mainland China.
