Micro Mist Mouthguard Device Shines in Geneva
Dr James Tsoi, Associate Professor in Dental Materials Science, and his team received Silver Medal at the Special Edition 2022 Inventions Geneva Evaluation Days for the project “Micro Mist Scale Mouthguard Cleaning Device” which is a novel 3D-printable multioutlet mouthguard design with micro-mist technology to remove initial dental plaque precisely for elderly and people with disabilities.
The plaque cleaning apparatus uses a dental polymeric 3D printing technique to fabricate a soft personalised mouthguard, which can generate micro-scale mist at high velocity that can kinetically and precisely remove initial dental plaque at the gumline and interdental areas with minimum amount of water. This thus reduces the risk of aspiration, enhances the user’s physical and psychological health, and reduces the risk of Alzheimer’s, heart and kidney diseases caused by oral bacteria.
