Newest discoveries unveiled at Faculty Annual Scientific Meeting

More than 200 researchers from Southeast Asia gathered for an engaging day of oral and poster presentations, constructive feedback, and academic discussions at the HKU Faculty of Dentistry’s Annual Scientific Meeting, held on 10 December 2024 at the Prince Philip Dental Hospital.
Professor Lijian Jin, Acting Dean of Dentistry, opened the meeting, introducing it as a forum for students, staff, and guests to proudly showcase their recent findings and inventions. He encouraged attendees to strengthen networks, stimulate critical thinking, exchange ideas, and foster innovation by seeking out opportunities for potential interdisciplinary and international collaborations.

Professor Chak-sing Lau, HKU Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Health) and Dean of Medicine, delivered the keynote presentation to commence the day’s proceedings. Titled “Transforming healthcare through collaboration, innovation, and research excellence”, Professor Lau’s talk aimed to stimulate collaboration among HKU’s faculties, especially medical and dental faculties, as a prerequisite to catalysing impactful and cutting-edge innovations that address modern healthcare challenges. He promoted the use of and training in artificial intelligence, big data, and emerging biomedical technologies to co-create interdisciplinary research solutions to multi-dimensional medical problems. “It is only through the adoption of a holistic and synergistic approach to the research endeavours of all the university’s faculties that we can successfully harness the full transformative power of collaboration and innovation to advance healthcare solutions for future generations,” he concluded.
Introduced by Professor Chengfei Zhang, Associate Dean for Research and Innovation, the Oral Presentation session featured 12 presentations of the latest research findings and clinical advancements by Faculty students and researchers and international delegates.

In the afternoon, Professor Jin held a private Deans’ Forum with the deans or dean’s representative from four dental schools: Professor Pornchai Jansisyanont from Chulalongkorn University, Thailand; Professor Chung Shin Hye from Seoul National University, South Korea; Professor Nia Ayu Ismaniati from the University of Indonesia, Indonesia; and Professor Firdaus Hariri from the University of Malaya, Malaysia. They exchanged institutional insights in cultivating innovation and explored potential areas of international partnership.

After two parallel sessions of 40 more engaging presentations and discussions on a diverse range of research topics in oral health and technology, participants reconvened in the Faculty Lounge for the Prize Presentation and Concluding Remarks. Professor Jin relayed the results of the judging panel, congratulating eight of the participants as winners of Outstanding Presentation Awards in recognition of their excellent research presentations. He thanked everyone who participated in the event, urging them to continue striving for impactful collaborative research and making significant contributions to the field.
