The HKU Faculty of Dentistry left a lasting impression at the Hong Kong International Dental Expo and Symposium (HKIDEAS) at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on 23-25 August 2024, as representatives shared their dental wisdom and latest advancements in oral health research and innovation.
Organised by the Hong Kong Dental Association, HKIDEAS is an annual international networking event for all those studying, researching, and working in dentistry to exchange ideas, insights, and trends. Under the theme of “Advancing better care in dentistry”, the 13th edition in 2024 provided a forum where attendees could elevate their knowledge, competencies, and skills to ensure the continuous advancement of oral health in a rapidly developing landscape.
During the three-day conference, Faculty staff and students took part in scientific symposia, research poster presentations, and exhibition booth sessions, presenting their most recent discoveries and accomplishments in dental care and technology to peers from the international dental community. Topics of talks given by staff were wide ranging, covering new developments in oral and maxillofacial surgery, paediatric dentistry, endodontics, orthodontics, and public health.

In the research poster competition, three Faculty students achieved impressive results, garnering a total of four research awards. Ms Qiuyan Xie (PhD student) won the Best Poster Award for presenting findings from a project on arresting dental caries (tooth decay) by applying silver diamine fluoride. She also received a Merit Award for presenting a project on preventing dental caries in preschoolers using fluoride toothpaste. Dr Reinhard Chau (PhD student) won the 1st Runner-up Award for a study on chatbot accuracy in answering dentistry questions. Dr Jason Cheng (BDS Class 2024 student) won the 2nd Runner-up Award for a study on the accuracy of intraoral digital scanning of a dental implant.
We look forward to continuing making contributions to the dental field, deepening connections with colleagues from around the world, and participating in future HKIDEAS events.
“Our delegation ably demonstrated HKU’s firm commitment to furthering dental science. My heartiest congratulations go to our research prize winners, and many thanks go to our Faculty speakers for delivering enlightening state-of-the-art lectures, as well as to the staff and students who promoted the Faculty at our exhibition booth,” said Professor Lijian Jin, Acting Dean of the HKU Faculty of Dentistry. “We look forward to continuing making contributions to the dental field, deepening connections with colleagues from around the world, and participating in future HKIDEAS events.”
