School pupils explore HKU Dentistry on Information Day
Professor Mike Leung and Sabrina Ng answer questions from prospective students and their parents.
More than 400 pupils from schools all over Hong Kong attended the HKU Faculty of Dentistry’s Information Day on 26 October 2024, eager to learn about the world of dentistry, what dental training entails, and what it means to be a dentist. During the day, the visitors received an introduction to the HKU undergraduate dental curriculum, participated in guided tours of the Faculty’s classrooms, clinics, training laboratories, and dental library, and interacted with current staff and students.
The welcome lecture delivered by Professor Mike Leung, Admissions Tutor, was highly popular, with all three sessions filled to capacity. In his talk, Professor Leung gave a comprehensive overview of the six-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programme, described admission requirements, and highlighted the roles and responsibilities of dental professionals. He also answered questions from the prospective students and their parents, providing detailed information about the admissions process and post-graduation career paths. Sabrina Ng, BDS Year 5 student, joined one of the sessions to share her personal experiences of the BDS programme so far and she also gave tips on applying to the course.
Participants gain hands-on experience in the Simulation Laboratory.
Participants also had the opportunity to take part in hands-on educational activities, including conducting a mock oral check-up using various dental instruments on a “dummy head” in the Simulation Laboratory. They then moved to the Comprehensive Dental Clinic, where they polished coins to mimic the process of tooth cleaning, allowing them to appreciate the precision and care required in a dental clinic. The interactive experience was well received by the visitors, as it allowed them to explore some practical aspects of dentistry in an enjoyable way, while gaining a glimpse into the daily tasks and activities of a dentist.
The Faculty sincerely thanks the participating staff and BDS students for their assistance in the smooth running of Information Day 2024 and for being available to answer visitor questions throughout the day. Their dedication and enthusiasm were instrumental in creating an engaging and informative experience for all attendees.
