Creating bonds between students and alumni
Dr John Yau (centre) shares his experience with his mentees.
The Mentorship Programme for Class 2027, co-organised by the Faculty and The University of Hong Kong Dental Alumni Association (HKUDAA), has successfully launched. Enthusiastic BDS students and dedicated dental alumni are set to embark on an enriching experience to exchange valuable insights and forge lifelong connections!
The inauguration ceremony, held on January 17, 2024 at JEN Hong Kong by Shangri-La, was attended by over 60 BDS 3 students and 30 dental alumni. Students and alumni were divided into small groups for engaging discussions and mentoring activities. From academic challenges to career choices, our students are able to gain invaluable guidance as they navigate their way into the dental profession.
Dr Dave Chan, President of HKUDAA, encouraged the participating BDS students to proactively reach out to their mentors. He highlighted that students can learn from their mentors how to maintain a work-life balance – an essential aspect of a successful dental career.

Dr John Yau, Honorary Clinical Assistant Professor in Paediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, serves as a mentor in the programme. Reflecting on his role, he stated, “As mentors, our role is not to shape mentees in our own likeness; rather, we open doors for them and encourage their exploration.”
Bella Chan (BDS 3) said the mentorship programme provided her a relaxed atmosphere to network with seasoned dental professionals. Adrian Choi (BDS 3) was eager to gain insights about the true nature of clinical practice. “With the guidance of my mentor, I hope to prepare myself for my future path.”
As mentors, our role is not to shape mentees in our own likeness; rather, we open doors for them and encourage their exploration.
The Faculty extends its sincere gratitude to the dental alumni for generously dedicating their time to the mentorship programme. We look forward to nurturing a two-way relationship in which both mentors and mentees can learn from each other and grow together.
Special thanks to Haleon (GSK) for supporting the mentorship programme.
The BDS students and the dental graduates share a joyful night.
