HKU Dentistry continues to shine brightly, and has once again demonstrated its academic excellence and commitment to fostering the highest standards of dental education and groundbreaking research. In the recently announced QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024, HKU has secured an impressive 3rd position globally, solidifying its reputation as one of the world’s leading institutions for Dentistry.
This latest remarkable achievement is not an isolated feat but a testament to a longstanding legacy. For eight out of the past ten years (2015 – 2024), HKU Dentistry has consistently maintained a top three position. This is a tremendous success unparalleled by any other dental institution in the world.
This extraordinary accomplishment would not have been possible without our exceptionally talented clinicians, clinician scientists, and scientists; the dedicated support of the professional faculty staff, Institute for Advanced Dentistry, and the Prince Philip Dental Hospital; and the intellectually stimulating and collaborative academic environment at HKU.

Furthermore, the Faculty’s rise in the Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects from 50th in 2017 to 4th position in 2023 is yet another testament to our remarkable progress. These outstanding benchmarking results have been accompanied by an 11-fold increase in competitive external funding and a doubling in publications in Q1 journals.
To celebrate this momentous milestone, faculty members gathered on April 10 in the Faculty Lounge for an uplifting reception. It was a joyous occasion where we collectively celebrated our shared pride and recognised the efforts that contributed to this achievement. As we reflect on our past accomplishments, we also anticipate a promising and bright future.
Three cheers to the continued success of HKU Dentistry and the exciting prospects that lie ahead!
