It has been almost 40 years since the Faculty of Dentistry was established at the University of Hong Kong. It was the first and remains the only institution of higher education in dentistry in Hong Kong. Today, two out of every three dentists and dental specialists working in Hong Kong have been educated at our Faculty. Collectively, our graduates provide a broad range of oral healthcare to approximately five million people in Hong Kong alone and to many more in the Mainland and other places around the world.
From its humble beginnings, staff and students of the Faculty together with our colleagues of the Prince Philip Dental Hospital have built a world-class institution. The undergraduate programme has been established first and the graduates of the first class, i.e. the “first batch” as they like to call it, continue to carry a badge of pride as those who blazed the trail for many generations of students to come. Dental specialty programmes and research programmes followed later. From the initial 76, the number of students enrolled in the programmes at the Faculty is projected to grow almost 10-fold by 2027.
From its humble beginnings, staff and students of the Faculty together with our colleagues of the Prince Philip Dental Hospital have built a world-class institution.
To celebrate our collective achievements and prepare for the future, we have planned a series of events that will take place throughout the year 2022 and culminate in a Symposium and Gala Dinner. We already kicked off the 40th Anniversary Celebration with a football match, of which you find a report in this issue of the Expressions. Please come and join us to reconnect with our friends and colleagues and meet our staff and students.
I look forward to seeing you all.
