Miss Chu Chui Shan, PhD student in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery received the first runner-up prize in “The 2021 ROHTO Award HK – Competition on Ideas For New Technology and Innovation in ‘Health Care’ Research and Development” in late July.
Her winning project “Digital Healthcare Technology for Precision Oncology: Development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) - driven clinical models to predict prognosis and select treatments for pan-cancer applications” is a comprehensive research on employing deep learning to predict prognosis and select treatments for cancer patients. The study can assist in the reform of current guidelines for cancer management.
Amazed to win at the competition, Miss Chu also expressed her deep gratitude to her supervisor, Dr Liwu Zheng, Clinical Associate Professor in Oral Medicine, and co-supervisor, Dr Joshua Ho (School of Biomedical Sciences, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine) as well as her collaborator, Dr Nikki Lee (Department of Surgery, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine) for their insightful advice.
“I am so happy that the research ideas were recognized by ROHTO and this implicates the clinical translatability of the project,” she concluded. Upon completion of this project with the development of the prediction models, she will explore the related clinical application.
