The Faculty and Dental Orientation Committee Welcome BDS Freshmen
To welcome the freshmen of this academic year, the Faculty arranged the Induction Talk and Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) First Year Orientation 2021 at HKU Main Campus and Prince Philip Dental Hospital respectively.

On 19 August, all BDS Year 1 students attended the Induction Talk at the Centennial Campus, HKU. Faculty members, Professor Gary Cheung, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Education), Dr James Tsoi, Faculty Academic Advising & First Year Experience Coordinator and Dr Waruna Dissanayaka, Assistant Dean (Electives and Experiential Learning), together with several HKU departments, welcomed and delivered talks to the freshers. Topics included the overview of the BDS curriculum, Academic English Courses, Common Core Curriculum, IT services, Academic Advising and Student Affairs. The Induction Talk provided useful information to acquaint the freshmen with the campus life and student services at HKU.

Dean welcomes new students
On 1 September, the Faculty prepared an Orientation Day and welcomed the BDS freshmen at the Prince Philip Dental Hospital.
Dean, Professor Thomas Flemmig kicked off the event and he wished the new students a great time with the Faculty and a fruitful university life. He also encouraged them to explore their interests besides the dental profession. “Go beyond the dental curriculum and try your best to get involved in your particular interests. University is an international place. It is a great opportunity to get out of your comfort zone and meet and mingle with other people across all the faculties.”

Professor Gary Cheung further elaborated on the new BDS curriculum. Later, Professor Edward Lo presented anti-plagiarism policies. Dr James Tsoi also spoke on the “Introduction of Learning Environment” with Miss Jessica Wong, E-Learning Officer.

Apart from the Faculty’s event, the Dental Orientation Committee welcomed Bachelor of Dental Surgery Freshmen of Class 27’ to the dental family through the orientation programme held from 18 to 22 August.
The orientation programme was kicked off by the welcoming ceremony. The Committee was honoured to have Dr Century Tsang, President of the Hong Kong Dental Association and Dr Ada Lo, President of the University of Hong Kong Dental Alumni Association as guest speakers, as well as student representatives from the Dental Society to introduce their organisations to freshmen.
During the camp, freshmen were engaged in an array of programmes that helped them better understand themselves and get prepared for the university life ahead.
The Committee wishes the freshmen a fruitful university life and acquires lifelong acquaintances in the coming six years of miraculous journey with the Faculty of Dentistry.
