Video Competition and Exhibition to Enhance Public Awareness on Oral Health
Formed by Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) students, the Dental Public Health Committee (DPHC) held an award presentation ceremony on 6 August for the winners of the “Secondary School Video Competition” (原「齒」創作), including best three, five merits and one most popular award.
The competition aimed to enhance the awareness of secondary school students on dental caries, oral hygiene and misconceptions about oral health.
Over one hundred students from thirty schools participated in the competition. They demonstrated their talent and creativity in producing short videos on information about caries including its cause, prevention and treatments, and on oral care and hygiene. Based on the assessment criteria – accurate and precise content (40%), creativity and interesting delivery (30%), good technique in editing and sound effects (30%), Heep Yunn School was chosen by the judging panel as the champion.

Addressing the audience in the opening speech, Professor CH Chu, Associate Dean (External Relations) of the Faculty of Dentistry said: “The Faculty is committed to serving the society and educating our next generation to take up responsibilities in community engagement.” He hoped the event could inspire secondary school students to study Dentistry.

Chairperson of DPHC, Miss Kelly Sze (BDS) Year 2* student said, “Through this competition, we sincerely hope that all participants have developed an awareness towards oral health maintenance and prevention of common oral diseases.”
Also officiating at the ceremony, Dr Century Tsang, President of Hong Kong Dental Association# (HKDA) shared about dental-related activities that engage secondary school students such as participation of the HKDA Healthy Smile Cambodia Service Trip with dentists; and Dr Ollie Yu, Clinical Assistant Professor in Cariology of the Faculty of Dentistry spoke of dental caries.

With the objective to educate the university students on the etiology and prevention of dental caries through proper oral hygiene maintenance and good dietary habits, the Dental Public Health Committee (DPHC), organised an oral health exhibition named “齒作俑者” at Sun Yat Sen Place on 22 October.
The Exhibition included display boards with oral health information such as etiology, signs, symptoms and early treatments of dental caries, prevention strategies for caries, healthy dietary habits and comparison among different oral hygiene products.
In addition, DPHC members demonstrated the correct teeth-brushing and flossing techniques at the oral information booth. Participants also enjoyed the two game booths where they could test their oral hygiene knowledge and win prizes.
Project in-charge BDS Year 3 students Miss Becky Lee and Miss Eunice Leung said, “DPHC is committed to serving the society and educating the public on developing an awareness towards oral health maintenance and prevention of common oral diseases through community engagement.” The event concluded in success and attracted around 200 participants.
